Pillar 1: Get the Most Precise Diagnosis with PET-CT

PET-CT technology shows biological activity within organs and can, therefore, detect cancer in the earliest stages.

  • PET-CT scans produce highly detailed images:
    • They show exactly where the cancer is in your body;
    • Your surgery will be exact and precise;
    • Your surgeon will know if they removed all the cancer.
  • PET-CT scans show the difference between healthy tissue, scar tissue, benign tissue, and tumour tissue:
    • The image shows exactly how aggressive your tumours are;
    • You know exactly what is cancerous and what is not;
    • Your treatment plan will be correct from the start;
    • You will know if your treatment is working as well as hoped.

What do PET-CT Scans Detect?

A PET-CT scan uses two technologies in one machine: positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT). Unlike other imaging tools, a single PET/CT scan can show detailed information on both the structure and function of the body’s cells and tissues.

Significantly, a PET-CT can:

  1. Show the difference between normal and tumor cells in your body
  2. Show the stage and aggressiveness of your cancer

In other words, the PET-CT shows you exactly where the cancer is in your body and how aggressive it is. Therefore, it can be used to identify primary tumour sites (where the cancer originated). This information is vital to creating an optimal treatment plan.

How Does a PET-CT Scan Work?

With PET-CT, patients are injected with a radioactive glucose solution (approximately the same amount of radiation that you might experience with a standard X-ray). Since cancer cells utilize glucose for their rapid growth, they quickly uptake a significant amount of the solution and glow when imaged. This shows us the exact size and location of tumours, anywhere in your body.

PET-CT scans are used for many types of cancer and are more accurate in diagnosing cancer than PET scans alone.

Comparing PET-CT and CT Scans

If you’ve already had a CT scan, you might be wondering: is it really necessary to get a PET-CT scan? The answer is yes! CT scans can produce false negatives or false positives – and you want to make sure that you haven’t gotten either of those.

Our Cancer Care Research and Advocacy Specialists have seen many clients who’d been told (by their doctor) that they were cancer-free, based on the results of a CT scan. But when they got a private PET/CT scan, the PET/CT identified a tumour that would have otherwise gone untreated. Don't let this happen to you! See our PET-CT vs CT comparison to learn more.

How to Get a PET-CT Scan

PET-CT imaging provides you, your oncologist, and your surgeon with information about exactly what’s happening in your body and how to best treat your cancer. And until the use of this technology becomes a part of standard cancer care in Canada, CTOAM is here to ensure that you have access to it.

In addition to detailed imaging (PET-CT), precision oncology uses detailed genetic testing and personalized cancer research to provide your treatment team with the most detailed data possible via medical science – so, together, you can make the best treatment decisions and ensure you have the best chances of a successful treatment outcome.

If you think you might have cancer, you should consider getting at PET-CT scan as soon as possible. The sooner you know the facts, the sooner you can either relax (and not go through any unnecessary treatment or further anxiety) OR the sooner you can start on early treatment options. A fast and accurate diagnosis is the best way to increase your chances of beating cancer.

Do You Want to Ensure Your Cancer Diagnosis is Accurate?

While a PET/CT is an excellent imaging tool, it alone is not enough to give you an accurate diagnosis. For an accurate diagnosis, you also need to get comprehensive genetic testing done, and have the results analyzed by a genomics specialist (not a regular oncologist).

That’s why our Scientific Research and Advocacy Team at Cancer Treatment Options and Management will help you get the most advanced diagnostic tools (like PET/CT) and genetic testing (like tumor DNA sequencing and liquid biopsy) as fast as possible. And, most importantly, we’ll ensure the results of these tests are properly analyzed and put into immediate action for you.

In other words, we’ll ensure you get the right testing done immediately – and then we’ll analyze the results and get you started on the right treatment ASAP.

Speed and accuracy are the two most important factors in a successful treatment outcome.

Hear What Our Patients Have to Say...

"I was impressed with the research and knowledge that Alex from CTOAM has. He’s explained everything along the way; I’ve come to trust him implicitly. He always gives me hope, which is a huge benefit. I’d recommend for anyone diagnosed with cancer to give CTOAM a call and use this service. A doctor’s just a doctor – meaning, they don’t have time to do the research that CTOAM does, plus they have to stick with the protocols of standard care."
