Valproate: An Anticonvulsant Drug That Greatly Improves Patient Outcome When Used With Radiation/Chemotherapy

Valproate is an anticonvulsant medication often prescribed during chemotherapy. Interestingly, a retrospective cohort analysis of brain cancer patients uncovered evidence that Valproate greatly improved the outcome of patients when used with radiotherapy and standard carboplatin and vincristine chemotherapy. At a 19 month follow up, 14% of patients had complete responses, 36% had partial responses and 23% had stable diseases. I like this approach because it is a cheap and non toxic way of significantly improving treatment outcome.
