Dawna Brand was a special kind of person, and through her many years as senior laboratory instructor at the UVIC biology department, she changed the lives of countless students.

Dawna was an inspirational teacher with a vast and far reaching multi-disciplined knowledge of science and molecular biology.  She was responsible for inspiring many great scientists, with an emphasis on making the world a better place.

Importantly, she was my main teacher, and supported and encouraged me to use a multi-disciplined approach. During my formative undergraduate years, Dawna also provided me with free lab space to pursue my many projects, and encouraged me to follow my dreams with passion.

And if that wasn’t enough, she also provided me with a position as a lab instructor for my last few years at UVIC.

I have no doubt that if not for Dawna’s mentoring and friendship, CTOAM would not exist today.

Unfortunately, Dawna passed due to colon cancer while I was attending grad school and the last time I saw her was a tearful goodbye in August 2010. She is sorely missed by many.
